Bryan Talbot's history of British comics

To accompany the 2007 BBC series 'Comics Britannia' the Guardian commissioned Bryan Talbot to provide a 3 page illustrated history of British comics. So, without further ado, here's your bluffer's guide to British comics history c/o a master of the comic medium...

Here's Bryan's cover for Sufferin' Satellites fanzine #2 (July/August 1997) which he appears to have used as part of the cover to The Guide above...
...and then there was his cover for the Virgin Comics (2007) re-boot of Dan Dare

all works is (c) Bryan Talbot

  1. Eagle wasn't a reaction to US 'horror comics' etc because they couldn't be imported. Eagle was done in reaction to what were considered vulgar British comics!

  2. Hi Mike, thanks for your comment, I'd respectfully disagree with your view as Marcus Morris (who would go on to be Eagle editor) wrote an article for the Sunday Despatch on 13th Feb 1949 entitled 'Comics that bring horror to the nursery' - this article was about American horror comics rather than vulgar British comics. Cheers!
