London cartoon centre benefit comic - "Cash"

Here's a bit of London comics history for you..."Cash" a benefit comic for the London Cartoon Centre. As this is #1, I'm guessing either there were 2 more issues or there were 2 other one-off comics. Any information welcomed.

UKCAC 1986 - portfolio (part 1 of 3)

For the United Kingdom Comic Art Convention (UKCAC) in 1986 a portfolio of drawings was produced from the artists present at the convention. It features loads of great art, here's the first selection of images...

There is (was?) a copy for sale here and the description below gives some useful context for the portfolio...

From the press release -

"We believe that we've scheduled a completely unique idea for the convention that will provide you a completely unique and worthwhile souvenir of the weekend. On the Saturday we hope to persuade every professional artist present to contribute to an eight piece illustration that will be printed overnight to provide the UKCAC86 Portfolio. All going to schedule this will be on sale at £1.50 for Sunday lunchtime, with all profits going to African famine relief. We're only printing 600 portfolios, and the original artwork will be auctioned on Sunday... a true collector's item, so snap them up quickly."

British Library forthcoming talks - part 1 - Eddie Campbell

I've been scouring the British Library website to bring you details of forthcoming talks, here's the first one for you...

Explore the bizarre nature of romance and relationships in a mixture of comic strips and illustrated prose

Internationally bestselling author Audrey Niffenegger and her husband, graphic artist Eddie Campbell, discuss their new collaboration Bizarre Romance and other recent works. Chaired by international comics expert Paul Gravett.

Bizarre Romance is a quirky, irreverent collection that celebrates and satirises love of all kinds. It explores the good, the bad, the ugly and the just plain weird – with Niffenegger's sharp, imaginative prose and Campbell's diverse comic styles, always with a sense of humour and cosmic justice.

Eddie Campbell also discusses the discoveries in his other new book The Goat Getters: Jack Johnson, the Fight of the Century, and How a Bunch of Raucous Cartoonists Reinvented Comics (IDW), which throws new light on the rambunctious origins of American comics.

Audrey Niffenegger is a visual artist and writer who lives mostly in Chicago and occasionally in London. She has published six books, including the novels The Time Traveler's Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry. She helped to found the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts. Her art has been exhibited by Printworks Gallery in Chicago since 1986. She is a Professor in the Fiction Department of Columbia College. Her recent projects include a ballet, Raven Girl, in collaboration with Wayne McGregor for the Royal Opera House Ballet.

Eddie Campbell is a Scottish comics artist, probably best known as the illustrator and publisher of From Hell (written by Alan Moore). Campbell is also the creator of the semi-autobiographical Alec stories collected in Alec: The Years Have Pants, and Bacchus (aka Deadface), a wry adventure series about the few Greek gods who have survived to the present day.

Paul Gravett is a writer, historian and curator specialising in international comics. He has written Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics, Graphic Novels: Stories To Change Your Life and Comics Art, and edited 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die. He has curated numerous exhibitions in Britain and abroad, including retrospectives of Tove Jansson and Posy Simmonds, and co-curated Comics Unmasked: Art & Anarchy in the UK for the British Library, co-writing the accompanying book. His latest exhibition for the Barbican Centre, MANGASIA: Wonderlands of Asian Comics, coincides with a new book from Thames & Hudson.
