UPDATED - Captain Planet and the planeteers

Update (23/03/26) - I've completed the cover gallery via the addition of the cover for issue #3

I've now acquired some copies of Captain Planet so in red I've added details of writers, artists etc

Prompted by a question on a facebook group together I've been inspired to look into the 'Captain Planet and the planeteers' comic...I don't have any copies myself so I've scoured t'internet for the images below...Marvel US put out a 12-issue series but for Marvel UK I've only got up to issue 4 so far - were there more? Let me know!

Captain Planet and the planeteers, Marvel UK, issue 1, cover dated 12th October 1991
cover by Mario Capaldi and John Burns
The single story is called 'A hero for Earth' and is labelled as 'Stan Lee presents' so this sounds like a US reprint to me
Writers = Barry Dutter & Jim Salicrup
Pencils = José Delbo
Inker = Mike DeCarlo
Letterer = Jim Massara
Colour = Brad Vancata

Captain Planet and the planeteers, Marvel UK, issue 2, cover dated 26th October 1991
Mario Capaldi on cover art duties
Story 1 = A hero for Earth - no credits but assume it's as per issue 1 (above)
Story 2 = Toxic Terror!; story by Ian Rimmer, art by Mario Capaldi, lettering by Cie, colouring by Louise Cassell

Captain Planet and the planeteers, Marvel UK, issue 3, cover dated 9th November 1991
currently for sale here on ebay

Captain Planet and the planeteers, Marvel UK, issue 4, cover dated 23rd November 1991
Mario Capaldi and John Burns on cover art duties
Story 1 = 'Smog gets in your eyes' [continued from issue 3], script by Barry Dutter and Jim Salicrup; art by Jose Delbo & Stephen Baskerville; lettering by Jim Massara; colouring by Sarra Mossoff.

Story 2 = 'Carbon copy' [continued from issue 3], script by Ian Rimmer; art by Mario Capaldi and Bambos Georgiou; lettering by Cie; colouring by Helen Nally

Captain Planet and the planeteers, Marvel UK, holiday special
Hmmm, where did they get that idea for a cover from?
Published August 1992
The contents are a single story 'If you can't nuke em...join 'em'...script by Barry Dutter; pencils by Pat Broderick; inks by Bruce Patterson & Ralp Cabrera; letters by John Costanza; colours by Sarra Mossoff; story editor Rob Takar

And Tim Perkins worked on the annual (and he also worked on a colouring book and the colouring & activity book)

I posted the above in a Facebook group and John Michael Burns (renowned colourist and nephew of artist John M Burns) was kind enought to make a comment on the post...

UPDATED: 'The wisdom of gnomes'

One of the first comics I ever blogged about (herehere and here) was a title called 'Wanted' - it was published by 'Celebrity' - a publisher about whom I knew very little (then or now!). It would turn out that Celebrity's most successful title would be their Count Duckula comic (which I covered here), but they had at least one other title published. This was The wisdom of gnomes, an (according to wikipedia) animated series made in Spain and was a spin-off from the series 'David the gnome'.

UPDATED now with the cover to issue #7, #8, #15 and the discovery of a special

The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 1, 28th September 1989

The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 2, 25th October 1989
Cover art looks like it is by Mario Capaldi.
24 pages long
Inside you get a single story - Journey to Scotland - which runs to 16 pages - with the rest being a mix of games, puzzles and adverts.
Interior art is unsigned but looks like it could be Capaldi (albeit drawing in quite a simplified style).

The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 3, 8th November 1989

Now the question is - were there any more issues? Surely, no comic series stops after 3 issues? Sadly, I can't find any more but if you know differently do let me know.

UPDATE: I've now found the following references in Denis Gifford's old ACE newsletters...

Newsletter #115 (volume 13, issue 3), June 1990, Wisdom goes monthly from the April 1990 issue
The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 14, April 1990

The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 15, May 1990

The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 16, June 1990

The wisdom of the gnomes, Celebrity, issue 17, July 1990
Newsletter #117 (volume 13, issue 5), September 1990, the July 1990 issue of Wisdom is the final issue - issue #17 - and here it is c/o comics fan, and friend of the blog, Michael Carroll

So that's quite a few more issues than I was expecting and means there's plenty more issues to track down.

There were also (at least) 2 annuals produced - both look like they are sporting covers by Mario Capaldi.

The 1991 annual

Celebrity Publications postal address was Unit 1, H.Q. 3, Hook Rise South, Surbiton, Surrey, KT6 7NH

Editor is Floron Florenzo
Assistant to editor is Ben Lakofski
Editorial Director is Etta Saunder

And then there was this too - David the gnome, TV special #2, 99p

UPDATED: Marvel UK's Lady Lovely Locks

Updated with a cover image for issue #4...

A while ago I looked at Lady Lovely Locks comic here (no really, come back!) mainly because I was attracted by the Mario Capaldi covers. I'm still not clear how long this lasted (although it was at least 13 issues; a German edition ran for 14). I do know that issue 1 doesn't have the Nahomi strip in it that issue 10 does.

The photos below are mainly swiped from eBay - so that's not my hand in shot :)

The British Library catalogue has 'Lady Lovely Locks' lasting until issue 13...

...and friend of the blog Michael Carroll has let me know that I'm pretty sure that Lady Lovely Locks did indeed end with #13: It was absorbed into Care Bears and first appeared in issue #152, cover-dated 8 Oct 1988 - a week after what would have been the cover-date of LLL #13.
