The research on the 'Told in Pictures' stories (illustrated by Dudley D Watkins) is comprehensively told by friend of the blog Jeremy Briggs in Eagle Times autumn 2020 (volume 33, issue 3) - available via their blog here.
As well as researching the histories of the stories reprinted in these books Jeremy identified the differences between the first and second editions that exist. So far the hardest volume to track down seems to be a first edition 'Twist'. I'm just missing a copy of a first edition 'Crusoe'.
Anyway if you can fill in any of the gaps in the notes below do get in touch.

Seriously difficult to find first editions with good dust jackets
ReplyDeleteFinding any of these with good dust jackets are supper rare
ReplyDeletecertainly was! Even harder was the fact that I didn't want any of the dustjackets to have been 'price clipped'. A really lovely set of books.
DeleteYou have probably found out by now the first edition Robinson Crusoe does have a red lion on the title page
ReplyDeletethanks for your comments; I do now have a complete set of these books (all with un-price clipped wrappers) & I agree with you that the 1st edition does have a red (rather than grey) lion on the title page. Thanks again!
