This is a recent acquisition and is a bit of a mystery to me. It appears to be the cover for a Mandy picture library. BUT I've looked at all 277 covers of Mandy picture library and this isn't one of them. Perhaps it was an idea for a cover that never got used??
I also notice the 4 girls and instinctively wonder if they are supposed to be 'The 4 Mary's except that they appeared in Bunty not Mandy. There are 10 Bunty picture library issues that feature 'The 4 Mary's' and this isn't the cover for any of them.
Like I say, it's a mystery. Further hypotheses welcome!

There were a number of artworks by ‘Bella at the Bar” artist John Armstrong in his effects that could were apparently covers, but were unpublished. I wondered if they were test pieces, or artworks created on spec, to wing off to a publisher if an urgent call came in for a cover, and he was too busy to draw a new one
ReplyDeleteIt looks too rough to be a final cover?
ReplyDeleteagree; it's a rough

ReplyDeleteIs the artist Selby Donnison? (asks Shaqui Le Vesconte)
ReplyDeleteThis is a rough for the cover of "Jean at St Sinister's", Judy PSL 226. Artist Selby Donnison.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John that it seems like a rough design that wasn't accepted. The uniforms do make it look like a Four Marys story in spite of the logo - how was that applied by the way: is it glued on or some kind of overlay?
ReplyDeleteLogo is painted on; it's an integral part of the art
