Velocity - Warren & Gary Pleece
This is just a shout out for some recent acquisitions of some early small press work by Warren & Gary Pleece.
Velocity was published in the late 1980s and pre-dates Warren's work on True Faith (with Garth Ennis). A4 size, 36 pages, black & white art throughout. Predominantly strip pieces but with some text pieces. Well worth looking out for these early examples of the Pleece brothers work.

It follows Ennis’ return to British comics with the one-off revival of comedy strip Bonjo From Beyond The Stars in 2000 AD’s Christmas issue, which featured the last comics work by the late great Kevin O’Neill, and his scripts for Battle Action, the bestselling hardcover anthology reviving classic comics war series from the 1970s.
The new 13-episode story begins in 2000 AD Prog 2326, which will be on sale on 5 April in the UK – through newsagents, comic book stores, and the 2000 AD webshop and app – and in North America through Diamond Distribution in July.

Created by writer Gerry Finley-Day and artist Dave Gibbons, and debuting in 2000 AD in 1981, Rogue Trooper is the last of the G.I.s – Genetically-engineered Infantry designed to survive the poisoned and war-torn world of Nu Earth. Betrayed by his own side, he is a lone warrior stalking these blasted lands in search of the notorious Traitor General, accompanied by his dead comrades- their personalities encoded on ‘bio chips’ and inserted into his equipment.
In this new tale, Night’s Horizon is the period two weeks out of every year when Nu Earth’s orbit carries it closest to the black hole. The Norts call it Zvartchvintern; the first settlers knew it as Lightfall. Things have a reputation for going a little… screwy around this time. Now, Rogue Trooper is about to experience those effects first-hand…

The Lion & the Eagle - Aftershock comics
No! Not the 1969 merger between those two great comics, instead a guide to the current (!) comic that's out there. Written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by PJ Holden this story of the war in the Far east in 1942 is gripping. It's already proving hard to find back issues of. Grrr. Kosovo refugee benefit special - part 1 (of 2)
Always a pleasure to pick up an Alan Moore rarity and I'm assured that this comic is, despite only being produced in 1999, is already one of Moore's rarest works.
As you can see it was sold to raise money to benefit Kosovan refugees
As it says here...Only on sale once at a 2 day British Sci-Fi Galaxion convention in 1999. This was a once-only show organised rather disastrously on a Sunday and a Monday so attendances were not good on the Monday as I recall.
I am featuring this in The Guide as a copy sold for an amazing £100 on eBay UK in Jun 2013.
Some notes from noted fanzine collector and dealer Ewan B:
Featuring the unique and unpublished anywhere-else Alan Moore five page story The Serpent And The Sword with illustrations by Mike Fiamanya. Cover by artist Chris Achilleos and inside by Dave Gibbons (Alan Moore s Watchmen collaborator), Nao, Sandra Borg and Al Davison.
This is certainly one of the very rarest Alan Moore collectibles out there - and up there with Seminar no.2 and Embryo in terms of near-impossibility to find. I m sure the World-renowned Alan Moore expert and no.1 fan, Pádraig Ó Méalóid, won't mind me quoting a little of his blog about the book -
The Serpent and the Sword from Tales of Midnight, Kosovo Refugee Special, Galaxion '99 Convention pre-launch edition (Blue Silver Entertainment, October 1999). There was to have been a regular edition of this comic, but the pre-launch edition at Galaxion '99, which was held in London's Olympia Exhibition Centre over the weekend of Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th October, 1999, is apparently the only edition that actually got released.
I ve not been able to determine a print run but from experience I'd say in the low hundreds at most and since Galaxion 99 was a Sci-Fi convention rather than a Comics convention, I suspect most copies were either discarded or are in the collections of Blake's 7 or Star Wars fans! Who knows! I would also politely question whether Tales Of Midnight has the fan-base the marketing suggests it has again, who knows! Anyway, it s the first time I've ever seen it for real and probably the first time it s been for sale on ebay certainly in recent years.
The comic is both interesting and strange in its content. In addition to the original Alan Moore story, there s an original strip by Garth Ennis & Dave Gibbons, plus unique art by Bryan Talbot, John Higgins, John Bolton, Al Davison and some others I don t recognise. There s a four page strip by newster Richard Johnston. There s also a section of truly odd pictures of various Sci-Fi celebs posing with Tales Of Midnight characters including Walter Koenig (Chekov from Star Trek), Jacqueline Pearce (Blake's Seven) and Dave Prowse (Darth Vader)!!!
The comic itself is printed on heavy glossy stock throughout and is a thick 78 pages long.

Garth Ennis and PJ Holden are making their way to us for an in-store signing of their new comic, The Stringbags, on Saturday 27th June 2020 from 1-3pm.
Published by Dead Reckoning, The Stringbags follows the adventures of a Royal Navy crew flying the unfashionable and underrated biplane torpedo bomber, the Swordfish, inspired by true stories during World War II.
If you do the incredible often enough, they’ll want you to do the impossible.
Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy began World War II with torpedo bombers that could devastate enemy warships and merchantmen at will. Britain’s Royal Navy squadrons went to war equipped with the Fairey Swordfish. A biplane torpedo bomber in an age of monoplanes, the Swordfish was underpowered and under-gunned; an obsolete museum piece, an embarrassment. Its crews fully expected to be shot from the skies. Instead, they flew the ancient “Stringbag” into legend.
Writer Garth Ennis and artist PJ Holden present the story of the men who crewed the Swordfish: from their triumphs against the Italian Fleet at Taranto and the mighty German battleship Bismarck in the Atlantic, to the deadly challenge of the Channel Dash in the bleak winter waters of their homeland. They lived as they flew, without a second to lose—and the greatest tributes to their courage would come from the enemy who strove to kill them.

Crisis magazine - spin-off titles to collect - part 3
A few more strips from Crisis that were given the trade paperback treatment...
Garth Ennis & John McCrea's Troubled Souls originally appeared in Crisis issues 15-20, 22-27 - so that's 12 issues in total
For a few troubles more appeared in Crisis issues 40-43, 45-46 - so 6 issues in total
True Faith appeared in Crisis issues 29-34 and 36-38 so that's 9 issues in total. Here's the UK reprint...
And here's the US reprint from Vertigo...

"...To promote True Faith, Igor [Goldkin, publicist] sent the graphic novel to several religious groups as well as his normal group of press contacts. The NME reviewed the book as 'a brill kitchen-sink religious terrorism thriller', but others were not so taken by its tale of a disillusioned plumber who is radicalised by a group of church arsonists and embarks on a campaign of fiery retribution following the sudden death of his wife. Complaints were made and there were rumours that these had been brought to the attention of Robert Maxwell. true or not, the fact was that True Faith's 5,000 copies were suddenly recalled, withdrawn from sale after only two months"
