Eaglecon 80 - part 11

It occurs to me that I've not covered anything to do with the very first Eagle comic convention - Eaglecon 80. A recent sale by ace ebay seller phil-comics (here) of one of the awards from Eaglecon 80 (see below) for £155 has inspired me to start looking images.

Here's a sampler (although at 180 pages it's hard a 'sample', more like a whole catalogue!) from PS artbooks of their wares produced exclusively for London Super Comic Con (which ran from 2012-17) in 2013.

Of most interest to fans of Frank Hampson / Dan Dare are the pages in the sample that would subsequently appear in 'Tomorrow revisited'. Most interesting amongst the 11 pages are these 2 (below) which don't appear in 'Tomorrow revisited'

It's the lad himself! From Stephen Walsh and Keith Page comes the story of the life of Tony Hancock. Celebrating its release next month, we're happy to welcome artist Keith Page to the shop for a signing on Saturday 16th September 2023, from 1-2pm.

Hancock: The Lad Himself is the biopic of the titular comedian Tony Hancock that provides an earnest and attentive exploration into the British legend. Here are a few words from Publisher B7 Comics:

Tony Hancock – The Lad Himself tells the story of the legendary comedian in words, pictures, and not without a few interruptions from The Lad Himself, who proves to be a little infuriated at how his story is told… as those who know and love his work would fully expect! 

Tony Hancock somehow seems a natural subject for a comic – and, of course, he’s been in them before. At the height of his television fame, he appeared in Britain’s top-selling weekly, Film Fun. Since his death, he’s been the subject of biographies, radio dramas, and even a couple of television films. With the advent of satellite TV and DVD, he seems to be everywhere.

This funny, powerful and poignant graphic novel charts the life of the often troubled comedian with searing honesty but great affection – with Hancock contributing acerbic commentary in the telling. It’s a unique approach to recounting Hancock’s life story – as you would expect when dealing with such an extraordinary talent, whose enduring appeal is testament to his comedy genius.

Ally Sloper, 1976 Alan Class revival

Two interesting Ally Sloper revival items are up for sale this week from the personal collection of comics publisher Alan Class.

First up is this lost - a publicity poster for the 1976 Ally Sloper comic that Alan Class published and Denis Gifford edited

Next up is this lot - a comics 'jam piece' from the launch party with lots of artists drawing their own versions of Ally Sloper. Artists who contributed include Hunt Emerson, Walter Bell, Alan Vince, Terry Wakefield, Keith J Luck, Tony Glynn, Keith Page, Ann Spano, Pany Clifford, Ewan Masters, Ed McHenry, Denis Gifford & Kevin O'Neill

Just to give you a sense of scale here's a scan from Ally Sloper #2 (October 1976) showing the piece being signed - it's huge!

Black Beth & Sláine the King

 I'm always delighted to discover reprints of Scream! material that I didn't know about. In which case let me present these two comics to you...

there's 17 pages of coloured in Black Beth action for you in issue 21 and just 6 pages in issue 22

Yes it's the January 1989 and February 1989 issues of Sláine the King from Quality Comics. Inside them you'll find the Black Beth strip which originally appeared in the 1988 Scream! holiday special (cover below) - image c/o here - cover art by Keith Page
