The Barrie Mitchell exhibition that took place in Ryde in February 2026 had many highlights and a LOT of art. I tried to take photos of all the art but there was too much! Anyway, here's the start of a long series of posts all about the art that was there...

The story of Doncaster

I've looked before at newspaper comic strips (click here for all previous mention on the blog) and I'm always on the look out for strips that are new to me.

'The story of Doncaster' [published  by Doncaster Gazette] certainly falls into that category! A recent spot on ebay [from this seller] the listing described the item thus... 

Here we have the softback booklet ' Doncaster Gazette - The Story of Doncaster ' which is a blank booklet in which to stick the strip stories found in the Doncaster Gazette at the time telling the story of the town.

The strips are enclosed within the book but are not stuck in.

Isometrics newspaper strip

Recently (here) I looked at a Daily Express health based comic strip. This is the only other strip I know of but there may be others! This is by the same writer (Ridwan Aitken) but a different Modesty Blaise artist - this time it's Romero.

The whole point of Isometrics seems to be that you can exercise without moving. You just don't move for six seconds (!!!) and that's your exercise. Can't believe this stuff isn't still very popular unless, just maybe, it doesn't work.

Sleep Clinic - Neville Colvin

One for fans of newspaper strip collections today...yes it's 'Sleep Clinic'. I'm aware of one other similar publicaton by The Daily Express ('Isometrics') which I'll feature on the blog soon. Were there other health based newspaper strips I'm not aware of???  

Script by Ridwan Aitken and art by Neville Colvin. Colvin is probably most well known for his long run on the Modesty Blaise newspaper strip. His wikipedia entry is here.

Last of the summer wine - the Daily Star years!

I'm always delighted to feature newspaper strips on the blog (see this link for all mentions of newspaper strips so far) especially one-off collections.

The Daily Star newspaper most notably had a Judge Dredd strip in it for many years but it also had other strips and it's those that I'm more interested in. 

So far there's Ben & Katie (here) which was their version of George & Lynne. We can now add Last of the summer wine to that list. Only one reprint volume was produced (see images below - all taken from here - thanks!)
