Awesome comics podcast #200 raffle - all the best bits

This is a place to keep track of the best of the items that have been donated to the raffle that I'll be running at the live recording of the Awesome Comics podcast #200 (4th May, 2 Chairmen pub in Westminster, noon-5pm). The raffle is to raise money for Little Heroes.

Gareth Sleightholme has donated these are all original inks over pencils, all rubber-stamped and signed in pencil all done at A3 or a tad smaller... left to right from the top - Medusa, The Avengers, Brainiac and Kandor, Slaine, Foghorn Leghorn (as Kingpin) with Daredevil & Howard the Duck (I don't know why), Doc Savage, Hollow/Penance, The Flash & Santa... theres also a digital A3 print of my Roomhead sketch, its the only one ever rubber stamped like that, so even though its not an "original" sketch, it is a one off of sorts... the comic at the bottom right is just for scale...

The bad guys are taking over the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic - with a nefarious special one-shot full of criminal capers and villainous ventures!

Matt Smith, alias Cyber-Matt, is a British comics editor. He became editor of 2000AD in January 2002, and took over as editor of the   Judge Dredd Megazine in February 2006. Smith is 2000 AD's ninth Tharg, and its longest serving. He has written several Judge Dredd novels, several one-off Dredd stories for FCBD and instalments of the syndicated Dredd newspaper strip, as well as Top of the World, Ma-Ma, a comic strip prequel to the movie Dredd. He won Eagle Awards for favourite editor in 2007, 2008 and 2011.

As part of our celebrations for Free Comic Book Day, Forbidden Planet are delighted to announce a special TITAN COMICS signing, with Jessica Martin and Simon Furman, taking place at our London Megastore from 3 - 4pm on Saturday 4th May!

Jessica Martin has had a glittering career in theatre, comedy, television and radio. She’s been a teenage jazz singer, a cult Doctor Who guest star, a West End musical theatre actress and has become a comic creator and published graphic novelist. Jessica will be signing our EXCLUSIVE cover of the FCBD title Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor.

We will also have the normal cover available to be signed.

Simon Furman writes comics and TV animation, and is best known for his work on Transformers. He’s written (literally) hundreds of titles for the ‘robots in disguise’ for Marvel, in both the UK and US, for Dreamave and for IDW Publishing. He’s also written Doctor Who, Dragon’s Claws, Death’s Head, Alpha Flight, Turok, She-Hulk, and What If? His television titles include Beast Wars and Dan Dare. Simon oversees the editorial content of Titan Books’ Transformers titles and ‘Comics Creators’ series. He will be signing the FCBD title RoboTech.

A mysterious techno-virus has been released on Earth, infecting 600 million people and turning them instantly into violent, monstrous engines of destruction. The heroes of the DCU are caught completely unprepared for a pandemic of this magnitude and struggle to save their loved ones first, but what happens to the World’s Greatest Heroes if the world ends?

Trevor Hairsine began his career drawing for the Judge Dredd Megazine and 2000AD. He spent some time working in the computer games industry as a concept artist, before returning to comics and working for Marvel Comics their Ultimate titles, X-Men, Captain America, the superhero/spy limited series Wisdom. as well as for a number of independent publishers on titles including the as yet unfinished Cla$$war for Com.X.

Striker - new book, old comics & vintage merchandise up for sale

One-man comics industry Pete Nash has some Striker related goodies for sale on his website...

First up is volume 7 of his complete collection of the (newspaper) strip, we're up to 2003 now, it's here for £25 (unsigned or £30 signed). These are huge full colour A4 volumes - the last volume had nearly 300 pages of story in it so they represent great value 

If you missed the original Striker comic - not the recent Kickstarter funded version - then great news, Pete has found a few spare sets - they're available here

Masters of Comics signing is announced

Gosh comics have announced (here) that they'll be having a signing to celebrate the publication of Joel Meadows book 'Masters of comics'...

As it says on the website...

To celebrate the release of Joel Meadows’ new book Masters of Comics, we’ll be hosting a signing with three of the incredible artists profiled in the book: Laurence Campbell, Posy Simmonds and Sean Phillips will be here (along with Joel) on Saturday June 15th, 1-2pm!

Similar to his 2008 book Studio Space, Joel has spent time in the studios of some of the most celebrated talents in the comics business, taking photos and conducting interviews.

“Readers are invited into the studio spaces of some of the most popular and prolific comic artists in the world. Through dynamic photography and exclusive interviews, Masters of Comics offers a rare, personal look at these artists' unique creative environments-spaces in which some of the greatest comics and graphic novels of the last fifty years took shape. Curated by Joel Meadows, editor of Tripwire Magazine, the book includes chapters on such legends as Milo Manara, Mike Kaluta, Walter Simonson, and more. The first in a series focusing on artists at work in a variety of mediums and industries, Masters of Comics offers a glimpse "behind the veil,"  shining new light on the artistic process, as well as providing a wonderful learning tool for aspiring artists wishing to learn from the greats.”

Laurence Campbell, a former 2000AD contributor, is a long-time artist on the Mignolaverse titles, notably now bringing the long-running BPRD saga to its close.

Sean Phillips has carved out a place as one of the preeminent crime storytellers in comics, particularly in his collaborations with writer Ed Brubaker. The new series of Criminal has just recently launched.

Posy Simmonds is the pioneering British graphic novelist behind classics such as Gemma Bovery, Tamara Drewe and her newest title Cassandra Darke.

Laurence, Sean and Posy are all featured in the book and will be appearing with Joel to sign here on Saturday June 15th, 1-2pm!
