'Magnetic Brain' art by Ron Turner

I reported previously (here) about a 'modern day' recreation of a Ron Turner cover that was up for sale...well if you missed out then the good news is that you've another chance now - albeit a different image. For sale here this is, as the seller says...

Ron Turner recreated this cover which originally appeared in the legendary VARGO STATTEN paperback series, first published in 1953.

The medium used is gouache and the size of the image is 365 x 255mm

Overall size of board is 490 x 355mm

Artwork is in excellent condition

Collecting Ron Turner - part 1

As a kid I easily recognised Ron Turner's distinctive art style but never warmed too it, seeing it as not nearly detailed enough for my tastes (based around the space work of Frank Hampson, Frank Bellamy and Ian Kennedy) but you live and learn and now I'm a keen collector of his work. So I thought Id share some of the items that are out there for any other Turner fans...

Before John Lawrence started producing his fantastic 'Space Ace' magazine he produced these 4 beauties...

Issue 1 (Sep/Oct 1985) contains "Mission to Vorga" and "Space Ace and the wreckers"


Issue 2 (Nov/Dec 1985) features the continuation of "Mission to Vorga" and "Space Ace and the hunter of Hankora"

Issue 3 (Feb 1986) features the conclusion of "Mission to Vorga" and "Space Ace and the terror on Titan"

Final issue (August 1986) has 2 Space Ace stories - "Space Ace and Blasco's revenge" and "Space Ace and the guided missile"

All are A5 sized and are 32-36 pages long - well worth checking out.

Space Ace #7 - exclusive!

John Lawrence has been in touch to let me know that issue 7 of his gloriously retro comics magazine, Ron Turner's Space Ace, is now out. Featuring the work of legendary British comics artist Ron Turner (with his work coloured by John Ridgway) issue 7 looks to be another good 'un. John is a long-standing fan (and publisher) of Ron's work and this magazine pays homage to his art om just one particular strip, Space Ace. So, if you like your sci-fi '50s style then this is for you.

The last issue was 40 A4 pages, of which 32 were in full colour (plus the covers).

Collecting Ron Turner - part 2

This is an A5 60 page story (from July 1990) fully illustrated by Ron Turner.

As a bonus all copies are signed by Ron himself...

In the classic American format (from January 1988) 33 page adaptation of the "Invaders from time" story.

Again a classic US format comic (from March 1988) is this 24 page adaptation

There was an in house ad on the inside back page showing what could have been, but never was - or certainly never was from Harrier Comics - as we saw from the item at the top of the post the Golden Amazon was eventually self-published in 1990 

Rare Ron Turner comics for sale

John Lawrence (publisher of fab retro fanzine, Space Ace) has been in touch to say that he's recently unearthed a small cache of the Ron Turner comics he produced in the 1980s...

He says..

If you're unfamiliar with them they were b/w publications in the American comic book format 

 

Nick Hazard - a cross between Dan Dare and Rick Random (33 pages)

Note: This is NOT the story currently being printed in Spaceship Away!

 

Kalgan the Golden -  an adaptation of a short sf story by E.C. Tubb.(28 pages)

 

Both have fully-painted colour covers by Ron.

It was sold by Compal in their May 2024 auction (lot 124).

Ron Turner art found in old comics fanzines (1)

One of the joys of tidying up any collection is the realisation that you've got stuff that you'd completely forgotten about, currently I'm selling off some stuff on ebay here and realised that this issue of ace British comic magazine The Comic Journal contains an 8 page (A5) comic strip by the legendary Ron Turner. The strory was written by John Russell Fearn before World War 2 as an unfinished fragment intended for a round robin series that was never completed.

Anyway, here's the opening page to whet your apetite...

Ron Turner art found in old comics fanzines (2)

The 2nd 'lost' Ron Turner can be found here in the pages of issue 21 of the Comic Journal. A 6 page strip this time. It's from the October 1939 issue of American pulp magazine Science Fiction). The strip was originally called Infra-Intellect when it was original written in 1937.

Action Man annual 1985

I'm always interested in a Fleetway annual - this is an interesting one as it's not associated with a contemporary comic...

The artists used are a cut what you might expect from a 'spin-off' annual and some of the contents look like it's been recycled from the Fleetway vaults (having been printed elsewhere before)...

Looks like Graham Coton in the inside front page

...and then we're straight into some Jim Watson art

...Ron Turner then gets 2 pages to illustrate

...This is by Frank Humphris and I'm sure has been printed elsewhere...
