Barbarella - Jean-Claude Forest, Virgin record stores

A recent acquisition is 3 (of 4) of the "The new adventures of Barbarella" comic by Jean-Claude Forest - originally available only in Virgin record stores (before they became Virgin megastores). These are A4, black & white, 19 pages per issue.

The final issue has a date of December 1968 so I assume that this was when this story originally came out. The story is untitled so I can't tell you which story it is but the image in frame 1 is Barbarella being interviewed about the idea of creating the delirium circus.

Any Barbarella fans out there who can point me in the direction of where this story sits in continuity?

I'd love to know more about precisely when these came out. These seem pricey to acquire online, so good luck if you're hunting them down.

  1. Just discovered this post. I have a set of these. They reprint the second Barbarella story, "Barbarella and the Wrath of the Minute Eater", which was apparently first published in 1974. One reference I've seen says it was written during the production of the film, which would tie with the 'December 1968' reference on the last page. That reference is also in the 2015 edition. Here's the kicker: the recent editions (translated by Kelly Sue DeConnick) are apparently the first translation in English according to a few places. Except that this 'Virgin Record Store' edition is *also* in English and it's a *different* translation (and a different visual style of text in the speech bubbles) than the DeConnick version. I've no idea if the Virgin one is thus the first English version, or a reprint of something that appeared elsewhere (e.g. Heavy Metal, etc). I'm not aware of an actual English book version of it from 1974? There really isn't much info on the Internet. As for why they were in the Virgin Megastore? No idea. They must have been given away (or bundled with something?) as there is no price on them, in fact no publisher/publication details at all. :-(

    1. Classic remake of the science fiction superhero fantasy comedy adventure melodrama film starring Jane Fonda as the queen of the universe & space mercenary from the distant future released in 1968 became a cult favorite & compilation film.

  2. Following my last comment, Google found this for me:

"Le Coleres du Mange-Minutes first appeared serialized in the Italian comic (fumetti) magazine linus, including three Speciale editions, from 1967 to 1970. Around the same time, in 1968, it was published as an oversized hardback in France (Kesselring). It was then collected in hardback editions in Germany (Wilherlm Heyne) in 1971 and Italy (Milano Libri) in 1973. It was serialized in France in 1980 and 1981 in the publication 16/22 (Dargaud). It was a part of a set of two hardback editions in France (Dargaud) and four hardback editions in German (Carlsen). Notable is a series of four stapled, newsprint editions released in Virgin Records Stores in 1981."
